* Biography

Dr. Chikada earned PhD in education from Nagoya University in January 2003. Chikada started his academic career as research associate at the School of Education, Nagoya University in 1995. Then he joined in the establishment of the Center for the Studies of Higher Education (CSHE), Nagoya University as an assistant professor in 1998. At CSHE he launched the teaching tips for university faculty with his colleagues under the initiative of professor Umakoshi, a famous scholar in comparative education worldwide and the first director of CSHE. This book with strange title as Growing Professor Tips is widely known in Japan as the first systematic guidebook on the basic pedagogy for higher education.

Since then, he has been engaging in the research and development on the pragmatic issues of higher education such as faculty development, first year experience, and postgraduate research supervision. Recent publication is The Study Tips for First Year Students (Tamagawa University Press; November 2009), Preparing Future Faculty in Japan (as a coauthor: Tamagawa University Press; March 2010). He currently serves an academic staff of AC21 (Academic Consortium 21) secretariat. In March 2011, he launched the faculty handbook for teaching & supervising international students by organizing the study group at Nagoya University. In March 2012, he developed The Faculty Handbook of Nagoya University. As he is also a staff of research development unit of Nagoya University Library in addition to CSHE, he has engaged in organizing the seminars and the courses on academic writing to enhance students’ critical and logical thinking competencies.

He also holds the Chair of Higher Education in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development, Nagoya University. In addition to the works at CSHE, he has been conducting the research on Vietnamese higher education. His doctoral dissertation focused on the transformation of Vietnamese higher education from the French colonial system to the socialistic system and from socialistic system to market-oriented system. In 2005, he won Hiratsuka Award from Japan Comparative Education Society for the publication based on the dissertation. His recent works on Vietnam is the Japanese translation of Education Law of Vietnam 2005 which was released in June, 2009. In 2012 the studies on the reform on Vietnamese secondary education and higher education will be published as chapter writings.
